*About the sculpture, Maria writes, ”I named her ‘Ganas’ from a speech Edward James Olmos, as Jaime Escalante, made to Hispanic students in his calculus class in the film, Stand and Deliver. Students from East L.A., he explained, needed the desire — the ganas — to work hard and achieve their goals. As a teacher, I watched this film for inspiration when each new school year began.”
